The Henry Samueli School
of Engineering and Applied Science (HSSEAS) at UCLA is proud
to announce its newly approved Master of Science (M.S.) degree,
with the diploma designation “Master
of Science in Engineering”, to be delivered OnLine. The
primary purpose of this new Program is to enable employed engineers
and computer scientists to enhance their technical education
beyond the Bachelor of Science level and to enhance their value to
the technical organizations in which they are employed. The training
and education that the proposed Master of Science in Engineering
Program offers are of significant importance and usefulness to
engineers, their employers, and to California and the nation.
It is at the M.S. level that the engineer has the opportunity
to learn a specialization in depth. It is at the M.S. level that
those engineers with advanced degrees may also renew and update
their knowledge of the technology advances that occur, and have
been occurring, at a rapid rate.
This Master of Science program is
addressed to those highly-qualified employed engineers who, for
various reasons, do not attend the on-campus M.S. programs, and
who are keenly interested in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of “cutting-edge”
engineering and technology.
Each student's transcript will list courses by department name and course number, in the same manner as they are for the on-campus programs. The transcript's degree designation will read "Master of Science in Engineering" and, because of equivalency, there will be no mention of "online."

Distinctive Features
of this Program |

|
|
| |
Each
course is fully equivalent to the corresponding on-campus
course; only the mode of delivery is different. Each course
is taught by the faculty members who teach the on-campus
course. The OnLine lectures are not mere videos of
on-campus
lectures; rather, they are separately and carefully prepared
for the OnLine student.

The Master of Science in Engineering
degree allows for combinations of courses in different
departments and thereby for multidisciplinary emphases.
When an area-of-study is within a department of
the School, an additional certificate will be issued
stating the nature of the equivalence to that department’s
Master
of Science degree.

The Program is delivered by electronic means. Students of the Program
receive all course materials, including lectures,
in an “on-line” manner.
The current mode of delivering many courses within
HSSEAS already relies heavily upon electronic means,
using the School’s
full service WEB interface, known as “CourseWeb.”
